Don Bosco School Kohima and Government of Nagaland Join Hands to Empower Students Through Consumer Awareness Programme

Kohima, June 30, 2026: Demonstrating the value of collaboration between educational institutions and government agencies, Don Bosco Higher Secondary School, Kohima, in partnership with the Department of Legal Metrology & Consumer Protection, Government of Nagaland, organized a Consumer Awareness Programme at the school auditorium on Monday. The initiative aimed to educate students on their rights and responsibilities as informed consumers under the theme, “Safe Products, Confident Consumer.”

The programme brought together officials from the Department of Legal Metrology & Consumer Protection, legal experts, educators, and students, highlighting the shared commitment of Don Bosco School and the Government of Nagaland to promote consumer literacy among young citizens.

The programme was chaired by Shri Mezo Koutsou, Inspector, Legal Metrology & Consumer Protection (LM&CP), Kohima. The gathering began with an invocation and welcome address delivered by the Principal of Don Bosco Higher Secondary School, Kohima, who welcomed the distinguished guests and emphasized the importance of consumer education in today’s rapidly changing marketplace.

The Chief Guest, Shri Limatoshi Jamir, Additional Controller and Head of Department, Legal Metrology & Consumer Protection, Government of Nagaland, addressed the gathering, stressing that informed consumers contribute significantly to a transparent and accountable market system. He encouraged students to become responsible citizens by exercising their consumer rights wisely and ethically.

The highlight of the programme was an informative session by Shri Sunjib Rana, Advocate and Panel Lawyer, Kohima District Legal Services Authority, who served as the resource person. Through practical examples and interactive explanations, he introduced the students to the “CHAIRS” principle of consumer rights, making the legal provisions easy to understand and remember.

He explained that CHAIRS stands for:

  • C – Choice: Every consumer has the right to choose from a variety of products and services without unfair influence.
  • H – Heard: Consumers have the right to be heard, ensuring that their grievances receive proper attention.
  • A – Awareness: Every consumer should be aware of both their rights and responsibilities.
  • I – Information: Consumers have the right to complete and accurate information about the quality, quantity, price, ingredients, and standards of products.
  • R – Redressal: Consumers have the right to seek redressal and know where and how to register complaints against unfair trade practices.
  • S – Safe: Every product and service should be safe and free from hazards that may endanger life or property.

The session encouraged active participation from students, who engaged with the speaker through questions and discussions, reflecting a keen interest in understanding consumer protection laws and ethical purchasing practices.

The programme concluded with remarks by Shri Shiekhozo, Assistant Controller, LM&CP, Kohima, who appreciated the enthusiastic participation of the students and thanked Don Bosco School for partnering with the Government of Nagaland in promoting consumer education. The event ended with refreshments.

The programme stands as a noteworthy example of how collaboration between Don Bosco School Kohima and the Government of Nagaland can effectively equip young people with essential life skills, empowering them to become informed, vigilant, and responsible consumers in society.
