Lisbon, 4 August 2023: The fourth day of the eagerly anticipated World Youth Day (WYD) event in Lisbon saw Pope Francis engage in a deeply moving confession ceremony and deliver a powerful message to the youth in attendance. The Holy Father’s presence and words left an indelible mark on the hearts of thousands of young individuals from around the world
The day commenced with a poignant moment at the Forgiveness Park, where Pope Francis heard the confessions of three young people representing diverse nationalities – Spanish, Italian, and Guatemalan. This act of reconciliation was witnessed by a throng of enthusiastic youth who gathered at the park, serenading the occasion with the heartfelt chant, “This is the Pope’s youth.”
The setting for the confessions held a special significance, as the confessionals were constructed by inmates from prisons in Coimbra, Paços de Ferreira, and Porto. Volunteers who played an instrumental role in organizing and building the confessionals shared their emotional experience of being able to witness Pope Francis in such close proximity, expressing gratitude for contributing to this profound moment of spiritual connection.
Following the confessions, Pope Francis proceeded to the Serafina Parish Center, where he met with representatives from various social and charitable assistance centers. During this encounter, the Holy Father emphasized inclusivity, stating, “There is room for everyone in the Church,” a message resonating deeply with the theme of unity and acceptance that underpins World Youth Day.
In his address to the young participants later in the day, Pope Francis exuded warmth and joy, extending his heartfelt welcome and gratitude for their presence. He highlighted the significance of each individual’s unique calling, drawing attention to the profound truth that they have been summoned by name, not by chance. “None of us are Christians by chance. We were all called by name. At the beginning of our lives, before the talents we have, before the darkness and the wounds we carry within us, we have been called. Why have we been called? Because we are loved,” the Pope affirmed, his words echoing throughout the gathering.
The day’s events included moments of spiritual enrichment, as participants attended catechesis sessions and celebrated Mass in churches selected according to language groups. The diverse representation of bishops and clergy added a sense of universality to the celebrations. A poignant highlight of the evening was the Way of the Cross, observed in commemoration of the Feast of Vianney, a renowned confessor.
As the event approached its final days, Pope Francis’s profound impact continued to be felt, with further gatherings and a heartfelt farewell Mass scheduled in the coming days. The event also showcased the charism of various religious congregations, reflecting the richness and diversity of the global Catholic community.
World Youth Day Lisbon 2023 has been marked by moments of spirituality, reflection, and connection, leaving an enduring legacy of unity and inspiration for the young participants who have come together to celebrate their faith.
