Character Formation More Important Than Degrees, Freshers Told at DBCK

KOHIMA, June 20: Emphasising that education goes beyond the mere acquisition of academic qualifications, Dr Alice K. Vizo (IPoS), Director of Postal Services, Nagaland, urged students to focus on character formation, resilience, and social responsibility while addressing the 12th Freshers’ Day of Don Bosco College, Kohima (DBCK) held on June 20.

Attending the programme as the special guest, Dr Vizo called upon the freshers to approach college life with purpose, discipline, and optimism. Stressing that true education encompasses holistic development, she remarked that success is not achieved overnight but is the result of perseverance, consistency, and sustained effort.

Drawing from her rich experience in public service, Dr Vizo encouraged the students to cultivate curiosity, integrity, and compassion, while preparing themselves to emerge as responsible citizens and future leaders of Nagaland and the nation. She also underscored the significance of effective time management, digital accountability, and remaining rooted in one’s cultural identity amidst a rapidly changing global landscape.

Speaking on behalf of the faculty, Dr Imtinaro Longkumer, Assistant Professor, Department of Education, exhorted the newly admitted students to uphold the values and traditions of the institution and make the best use of the opportunities available at DBCK.

Representing the freshers, Gensing Humtsoe of BA First Semester, Department of Political Science, expressed gratitude for the warm reception accorded to the newcomers and articulated the aspirations and expectations of the new batch.

The highlight of the programme was the crowning of N Bin Yemjong and Kesho Kent as Mr Fresher 2026 and Ms Fresher 2026 respectively.

Earlier, the welcome address was delivered by Bendang Jamir, Assistant Professor, Department of Political Science. The event was compered by Neilanuo Sachu, a fifth-semester student from the Department of History, while Fr Dr Tious Varghese, SDB, Principal of Don Bosco College, Kohima, invoked God’s blessings for the programme.

The DBCK Music Club presented a special musical performance, adding colour to the celebration. The programme concluded with a formal vote of thanks proposed by Mhalesienuo Shunyu, Head and Assistant Professor, Department of Zoology.
