St. Teresa’s Parish Golaghat Hosts Successful Seminar on ‘Know Your Church’ for Youth

Golaghat 9 July 2023: St. Teresa’s Parish in Golaghat recently hosted a two-day seminar titled “Know Your Church” on July 7th and 8th, 2023. The event aimed to educate and inform the youth of the parish about various aspects of their church, including its history, mission, structure, and activities. A total of 340 young individuals from 34 Catholic communities within the parish participated in the seminar, which featured sessions conducted by Fr. Blasius Tete SDB.

The seminar commenced on the evening of 7 July 2023 with a confession session for all the youth, followed by a Rosary service and a common adoration service. The following day, on 8 July a solemn mass was held, presided over by Fr. Blasius Tete SDB. During his homily, Fr. Blasius emphasized the importance of respecting and honouring parents, drawing inspiration from the biblical story of Esau and Jacob seeking blessings from their parents, Isaac and Rebecca.

The seminar’s inaugural function took place after breakfast, where Fr. Policarp Xalxo SDB, the principal of Don Bosco College Golaghat, extended a warm welcome to the resource person, fathers, sisters, and participants. Fr. Joseph Kindo SDB, the Parish Priest of Golaghat Parish, delivered a message acknowledging everyone’s presence and contributions, highlighting the significance of understanding and actively participating in the church community. An exhibition on the theme “Know Your Church” was organized by the youth, showcasing their creative insights. The sessions on the theme followed the exhibition.

The seminar featured various sessions covering different topics related to the church. The history and foundation of the church were explored, shedding light on its historical roots, key milestones, significant events, and notable personalities who played a role in its establishment and growth. Participants gained a deeper understanding of the rich heritage of their church and its impact on the local community.

Another session focused on Catholic spirituality, introducing participants to a wide range of beliefs, practices, and values that are central to the Catholic faith. Topics covered included prayers, Holy Mass, Sacraments, Scripture and tradition, devotion to Mary and the Saints, social service and justice, spiritual direction and formation, Lectio Divina, retreats, pilgrimages and shrines, praying for the deceased, works of mercy, novenas, Stations of the Cross, liturgical sessions, Divine Mercy, and more.

Participants also delved into the world of men and women religious groups and their charisms. They gained insights into the diverse missions and charisms of these groups, learning how they address societal needs through areas such as education, healthcare, social services, and spiritual guidance.

On the evening of 8 July the parish youth showcased their tremendous talents and diversity through cultural performances on stage. This cultural night provided a platform for artistic expression, cultural exchange, and community bonding. Mr. Amos Ekka, representing DB Tech, delivered a speech titled “Haath ker Vidya” to the youth of Golaghat Parish. He emphasized the importance of graphic designing (for class 12 and above), electricians (for Class 8 and above), mushroom cultivation, small poultry, and other projects being implemented within the parish for youth aged 18 to 30. Following Mr. Ekka, Fr. Blasius Tete spoke about “Safe Migration,” discussing the challenges and potential solutions related to migration. Participants gained a deeper understanding of the risks associated with unsafe migration practices and the significance of safe migration for individuals, families, and communities.

The seminar on “Know Your Church” proved to be a resounding success, achieving its objectives of educating, engaging, and empowering the participants. By providing valuable insights into the history, structure, mission, and activities of the church, the seminar fostered a stronger connection between the attendees and their faith community. The knowledge gained from the seminar is expected to enhance the participants’ church experience, providing them with a deeper sense of fulfilment and enrichment.
