Dimapur, 11 August 2023: In a heartfelt address delivered at the Don Bosco Provincial House in Dimapur on 11 August 2023, Bishop-Elect Rev Fr Benny Varghese offered insight into his upcoming role as the Bishop of Itanagar and his profound perspective on priestly ministry. The gathering, attended by Salesians of the houses in Dimapur was marked by a sense of unity and anticipation for the journey ahead.
During his address, Bishop-Elect Rev Fr Benny Varghese expressed his deep gratitude for the outpouring of prayers and well-wishes he had received following his appointment as the Bishop of Itanagar. Acknowledging the significance of the occasion, he spoke of his formative years and the influence of Rev Fr Jose Kuruvachira, the current provincial, who had taught him Epistemology during his philosophical studies.
As he prepares to take charge of the Itanagar diocese, Bishop-Elect Rev Fr Benny Varghese revealed his concerns about the challenges he may encounter. The diocese’s composition consists of merely 28 diocesan priests, supplemented by 105 religious priests representing 18 congregations, alongside 180 religious sisters belonging to 26 congregations. The Salesians, who contribute 17 fathers and a brother, are an integral part of the diocesan initiatives.
Drawing attention to the unique character of the Church within the Itanagar diocese, he highlighted the laity’s remarkable contributions. The laity’s active engagement and achievements have played a pivotal role in furthering the mission of the Church and the well-being of the community.
Transitioning to his reflections on priestly ministry, Bishop-Elect Rev Fr Benny Varghese delved into the multifaceted nature of the role. He described priestly ministry as the culmination of words, actions, and thoughts, underscoring its holistic impact on both the priest and the congregation. He emphasized the solemn responsibility entrusted to priests as representatives of Christ, embodying the roles of prophet, priest, and king.
Intrinsically linked to these roles are the sacraments and rites that priests administer. Bishop-Elect Rev Fr Benny Varghese highlighted the significance of the sacrament of reconciliation, the Holy sacrifice of the Mass, and the anointing of the sick. He portrayed the priestly office as a noble and lofty calling, surpassing even the dignity of angels.
Sharing his own journey, Bishop-Elect Rev Fr Benny Varghese, hailing from a traditional Christian family in Kerala, discussed his experiences and challenges in the priesthood spanning 25 years. He acknowledged the changing times and the pressures of performance-driven standards, while also addressing personal challenges such as homesickness, maintaining spiritual vitality, and combatting loneliness.
The Bishop-Elect recalled his bond with Fr Jacob Chittallappilly and Fr Andreas Kindo SDB, who tragically lost their lives in Manipur. He openly addressed the issue of internal discord, stressing the importance of unity and cooperation among priests.
Reflecting on his spiritual growth, Bishop-Elect Rev Fr Benny Varghese shared his transformative experiences during holiday visits with MSF fathers in Paren. He highlighted the ongoing need for personal and spiritual development, emphasizing the importance of continuous learning, media literacy, and spiritual orientation.
Looking ahead, the Bishop-Elect expressed his chosen motto for his episcopal ordination: “I can do all things, who strengthens me” (Philippians 4:13). In closing, he warmly invited all to join him in Itanagar for his episcopal ordination on October 15, 2023.
