Dimapur, 11 January 2023 : The Don Bosco Dimapur campus in Dimapur was hit by a sudden flash flood early this morning, leaving the entire area in a state of bewilderment and confusion. The alarming situation was captured in striking photographs taken by Fr. Daniel J, shedding light on the extent of campus submerged in flash flood.
The incessant rainfall that began last night continued throughout the night, leading to a significant rise in water levels. The ground floor of the ANMA Integrated Development Association (AIDA) was severely flooded, necessitating the urgent evacuation of furniture and other materials to the first floor. Animals such as those housed in the cowshed and piggery were shifted from getting drowned in the flash flood.
Residents living near the river, both from Nagaland and Assam, have been encroaching on the surrounding areas, leaving very little space for the excess water to disperse. Consequently, the volume of water that accumulated could not pass through the narrow stream, leading to the flash flood that affected the Don Bosco School campus.
Reacting to the situation, one of the school’s former principals took to social media, tweeting, “Staff and students will be happy to get a holiday tomorrow.” While the statement carried a light-hearted tone, it underlined the impact of the flood on the regular functioning of the school.
The floodwaters also entered the ground floor of AIDA, causing significant damage and forcing the relocation of various items to the first floor. Efforts are currently underway to shift belongings and mitigate further harm to the property.
The Don Bosco School community is now grappling with the aftermath of the flash flood. Authorities and staff members are working diligently to assess the damage and develop a plan for recovery. The incident serves as a stark reminder of the pressing need for better management of water resources in the region to prevent such incidents in the future.
As the clean-up and recovery efforts continue, the entire community is urged to stay vigilant and take necessary precautions in the face of unpredictable weather patterns. The Don Bosco School administration is closely monitoring the situation and will provide updates as the situation progresses.
