First Salesian Priest from Arunachal Pradesh Ordained: A Testament to Enduring Missionary Efforts

On December 17, the Catholic Church and the Salesian Congregation marked a historic moment as Father Wangbo George Wangsu, the first Salesian priest from Arunachal Pradesh, was ordained at St. Joseph Parish Mintong, by Rev. Bishop George Palliparambil, SDB, DD, the Bishop of Miao Diocese. Father Wangbo George Wangsu, belonging to the Wancho Tribe, is a testimony to the enduring missionary efforts in the region. Father Wangsu was ordained in the presence of Auxiliary Bishop Denis Panipitchai SDB and a host of Salesians, clergy, religious sisters, and faithful from across the region. Father George Wangsu is the eldest of seven siblings of Mr. Banwang and Mrs Banchoi Wangsu.

A colourful traditional welcome, featuring vibrant dances and cheers from the local community set the stage for the ordination ceremony. During the homily, Bishop Palliparambil highlighted the ordination motto, “At thy Word….” (Luke 5:5), reminding Father George of his call to be “another Christ” and urging him to remain steadfast in the priestly mission. He emphasized that the priesthood is a path of service and sacrifice, reflecting the essence of Christ’s ministry.

A Historic Milestone for the Salesian World
Father George Wangsu’s ordination is a landmark for the Salesian Congregation. He was the first from the Wancho Tribe and the Salesian missions in Arunachal Pradesh. His priesthood represents the fruit of years of missionary dedication by the Salesians in a challenging region of Arunachal Pradesh.

At the cultural programme following the ordination, Bishop Palliparambil reflected on the history of Catholicism in the region. He honoured the contributions of pioneers whose unwavering faith, despite persecution, laid the foundation for today’s thriving Catholic community. Their resilience was celebrated, and their legacy was acknowledged with gratitude.

Father Deli David, Vice Provincial of Dimapur, expressed heartfelt thanks to the parents of Father George Wangsu for their generous offering of their son to the Church and the Salesians. Drawing from the advice of Mama Margaret to her son Don Bosco, he reminded Father George Wangsu of the sacred responsibility of celebrating the Eucharist, quoting her words: “You are now a priest, and you will celebrate Mass. You are, therefore, closer to Jesus Christ. Remember that to begin to say Mass means to begin to suffer. You will not realize it immediately, but little by little, you will see that your mother told you the truth. From now on, think only of the salvation of souls, and do not worry about me.” He further encouraged him with the words of Pope Francis, saying, “We need priests who are fully human, capable of healthy relationships, and mature in confronting the challenges of ministry.”

A Day of Joy and Celebration
The ordination was not just a religious ceremony but a vibrant cultural event showcasing the rich traditions and faith of the Wancho Tribe. The colourful attire, traditional dances, and jubilant atmosphere added to the grandeur of the occasion.

This historic event marks a new chapter for the Church in Arunachal Pradesh and a milestone in the Salesian mission. Father Wangsu’s ordination is a beacon of hope and inspiration for future vocations from the region. The Salesian Congregation and the faithful celebrate this significant achievement with gratitude and joy.
