Kannur 28 July 2023: Two Salesians hailing from Manipur state have made their mark at Kannur University by securing top ranks in their respective Master’s programs. Isaiah Newme and Cl. Reuben Thaimei SDB, students of Don Bosco Arts & Science College in Angadikadavu, Irrity, Kannur, Kerala, have demonstrated their academic excellence and dedication to their chosen fields.
Isaiah Newme achieved an outstanding score of 85.41% and secured the second rank in the prestigious MA Journalism and Mass Communication programme for the academic years 2021-2023. Notably, the Department of Journalism and Mass Communication at Don Bosco Arts & Science College has made an extraordinary achievement, as students from this department grabbed the top nine ranks in the university.
Reflecting on his journey and studies at the college, Isaiah Newme shared, “The MA Journalism and Mass Communication course at Don Bosco Arts & Science College is highly practical and immensely useful in our lives. It offers an introduction to various fields of study, including cinema, photography, advertisement, print, and visual media. The college provides ample opportunities for students to explore and make the most of their talents.”
Meanwhile, Cl. Reuben Thaimei SDB achieved a commendable score of 80.33% and secured the third rank in the MC Counselling programme. The Department of Psychology at Don Bosco Arts & Science College has also made a significant impact, with a total of eight ranks secured by its students in the university.
Speaking about his achievement in the MSc Counselling Psychology programme, Cl. Reuben Thaimei SDB expressed his gratitude, saying, “Undertaking the Master’s Degree in Counselling Psychology under Kannur University was a herculean task for someone who came from a History Honours undergraduate background. However, my journey was made smoother and more fulfilling thanks to the nurturing environment provided by Don Bosco Arts and Science College, Angadikadavu. Guided by a group of distinguished professors, I was led towards my ultimate goal with unwavering support, enabling me to learn invaluable professional counselling skills and gain profound insights into my own personality and self-worth. I am deeply grateful to the Almighty for working through my Superiors, who facilitated my enrolment in this course.”
Don Bosco Arts & Science College, affiliated with the University of Kannur in Kerala, is owned and managed by the Salesians of Don Bosco, a renowned international organization within the Roman Catholic Church. As the second batch to undertake the Masters in Counselling Psychology, the students benefited from highly competent professors who exhibited a deep understanding of the subject matter. The esteemed Head of the Department, Rev. Fr. Dr. Kuriakose Pallikunnel, is a prominent figure in the field, renowned for his vast knowledge and expertise as a sought-after Professional Counsellor. The department emphasizes professionalism and encourages research endeavours, offering specialized areas of professional learning, including School Counselling, Career Counselling, Community Counselling, Addiction Counselling, Family and Marriage Counselling, Psychological Testing, and Experiments.
The college provides diverse field experiences, including visits to communities, schools, and institutions, as well as a 40-day internship in rehabilitation centers, where students engage with residents facing various challenges.
On a personal note, Cl. Reuben Thaimei SDB’s two-year journey through the Master’s program in Counselling Psychology proved to be immensely rewarding. It equipped him with empathy and valuable counseling skills, enabling him to adhere to the principles of Harm Reduction Therapy. Despite initial challenges adapting to a new environment, he relished both the academic and extracurricular aspects of college life, showcasing his musical talents and winning accolades in various competitions.
