Rome, 12 July 2023: In an announcement made by the Rector Major, Rt Rev Angel Fernandez Artime SDB, the Salesian congregation is preparing for significant changes in its leadership. The Rector Major, who is also the cardinal-elect, has informed the congregation that the next General Chapter, known as GC 29, is scheduled to begin in February 2025.
However, prior to the General Chapter, the current Rector Major will continue to hold office until 31 July 2024. Notably, despite the Consistory of 30 September 2023, he will remain in the position to conclude the summer session of the General Council in Europe. After this date, the Rector Major will present his resignation letter, as he has been called upon by the Holy Father to take on a special service entrusted to him.
The upcoming General Chapter (GC 29) will be convened by the present Rector Major at least one year before its celebration. During the General Chapter, the Vicar, Rt Rev Stefano SDB, will preside over the proceedings, ensuring a smooth transition of leadership within the congregation.
The announcement marks a pivotal moment for the Salesian congregation as it prepares to elect its new leadership and embrace the vision set forth in the next General Chapter. Members of the congregation eagerly anticipate the opportunity to shape the future direction of the Salesian community, following the dedicated service of the outgoing Rector Major, Rt Rev Angel Fernandez Artime SDB.
As the congregation looks forward to the forthcoming changes, the Salesian community worldwide remains committed to its mission of serving the youth and continuing the legacy of St. John Bosco.
